Gardner Elementary is named in honor of Edward L. Gardner, who served as principal of Waterloo Jr. High School from 1984 - 2002. Mr. Gardner was well respected and loved by students, parents, teachers, and administrators as well as community members. He began his education career as a social studies teacher and coach in the ROVA School District, Oneida, Illinois, and was principal at Chester High School before coming to Waterloo. He retired from WJHS in May of 2002 and passed away after a battle with cancer in May of 2003.
It is with great pride that Waterloo Community Unit School District #5 recognizes the contributions of Ed Gardner as an educator and role model in Waterloo.
